Cymbidium Orchids Coastal southern California is one of the best places in the world to grow Cymbidiums. They love lots of light (I grow mine in full sun - if the sun is too harsh, a little light shading may be needed.) Some people grow them under deciduous trees, so they are shaded in the hottest months, but get full sun when the trees lose their leaves in fall and winter. They need a sharp temperature drop in the fall to flower - which occurs naturally here. They can take winter temperatures down to, and even below freezing, so they do not need to be pampered at all. Where I live, they are a perfect patio or back-yard plant, probably the easiest orchid to grow and flower outdoors. This and subsequent Cymbidium pages (in no particular order, except roughly the order in which I aquired them) show the enormous variety of this genus, the easiest orchids to grow in my environment. |
