Vandaceous Orchids

Few orchids can compare with the Vanda and its relatives for intense color. Most also are long-lasting (a month or more), and quite a few are fragrant. Depending on parentage, they range from very cold-tolerant (Neofinetia falcata and its hybrids, and V. tricolor) to moderately cold-tolerant (V. coerulea hybrids) to relatively fragile. The cold-tolerant Vadaceous orchids live outside all year around, since they get much better light, air, and humidity than I can give them inside. The more fragile ones will spend the winter under a metal-halide light over the bathtub of my spare bathroom. The ones that come indoors during the winter may bloom only once, instead of their potential of twice per year, but that is better than losing, or damaging, the plant if the temparature drops. Most of these, when outdoors, live in the shady patio, but some (as noted) of the Neofinetia falcata group get full sun.

Ascda. Su-Fun Beauty

V. Parnuamornuod x Sriprai

Can't find reference to these parents, but it's clearly predominantly V. sanderiana alba.

Ascda. Suksamran Sunlight

V. tricolor var Suavis

Some consider this a separate species (V. suavis) rather than a variety - more purple in the lip, smaller spots that are more purple than brown, petals reflex farther back. I've heard it both ways... let the taxonomists duke this out.

V. Dicky Chua 'Hildos'

This plant has both strap-leaf and terete Vandas in its parentage. The leaves are very hard and stiff, from the V. teres ancestor (see V. Miss Joachim). It is a relatively warm-grower (it does come in for the winter) but grows and blooms in the shaded patio with the rest of the Vandaceous orchids for most of the year.

Vasco. Red Gem

The intensity and depth of color of this orchid needs to be seen to believed. The color of rubies, looks like stained glass with light behind it.

Aeridachnis Bogor
(Arachnis hookeriana x Aerides odorata)

What a surpise that this plant grew for me and is thriving - it is pretty much a warm grower, but only spends the coldest months of winter inside. It likes the better watering and humidity that it gets outside, and forgives a bit of chill.

V. Robert's Delight Ascda. Yip Sum Wah

Ascofenetia Petite Bouquet
Gets cold-tolerance from its Neofinetia falcata parent.
